Bone-building drugs, also known as bisphosphonates, like Fosamax and Reclast, have been under fire in recent weeks. While a recent study found staying on these types of drugs for five or more years can increase the risk of hip fracture, another study reassures the safety of these very same drugs.

Researchers concluded that the benefits of these drugs far outweigh the risks. A review of past studies found – of 14,000 women, only 12 suffered of the unusual fractures raised in the previous study.

Fosamax and similar drugs have been linked to other medical conditions in the past including heart irregularity, osteonecrosis of the jaw and most recently esophageal Cancer.

An estimated 10 million Americans, mostly women, have osteoporosis.
